Happy to be reading about grudges again! This distinction between grudges as motivation and grudges influencing motivation makes a ton of sense, and I wouldn’t have thought of it that way. And as always, love a Last Dance compilation.

"The Last Dance" is one of my absolute favorite sports documentaries. "The Two Escobars" on the Narco Era of Colombian soccer and "O.J. Made in America" are up there, too!

I would like to hear more about how this form of motivation compares to other forms of motivation in competition. It is very interesting. Thank you

It's definitely something I want to explore. Pete Carroll's insistence on not using fear as a motivational factor is based on his belief that if you have to use fear to motivate whether it's by threatening a job or playing time, there's a limit to how hard that player will work (i.e. he will work hard enough to avoid the negative consequence you're threatening). If you get a player to believe in not just himself but the collective goal, the upside is much higher. I could certainly see something similar when it comes to using grudges as motivation!
